CAA Mission:

The Children's Advocacy Alliance is comprised of concerned citizens who have the same interest at heart, "Putting the Health and Safety of Children First." Members of the C.A.A. pledge to take action to improve the lives and protect the children who are victims of abuse and neglect.

The children's Advocacy Alliance is a private, not-for-profit, 501(C)-3 Organization founded in 1998.

Children's Advocacy Alliance: Our Work

  • We advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children.

  • We support the work of bringing foster children to safe homes as efficiently and effectively as possible.

  • Every two years we paint the picture of Nevada children by gathering and publicizing information on child well-being through the Nevada Children’s report card.

  • We raised the funds to build the Children’s Advocacy Center, also known as SAINT, on the campus of Child Haven.

  • We initiated and funded the Sexual Predator Website for the State of Nevada.

  • We initiated and funded the newly created Diligent Search position to help located relatives of foster care children.

  • We hold events to help inspire and appreciate kids in the Child Welfare System: Select Santa, Wednesday’s Child Christmas Program and a Graduation Party for the foster care high school students.

Goals:

Current goals are works in progress, not ready for the public eye (but soon!)

One goal we accomplished in 2005 is strenghtening the Sex Offender Website we funded last legislative session. SB 341 passed June 05 and was co-sponsored by Senator Titus and Senator Raggio.

Accomplishments:

Since its beginning in 1997, Highlights of some of the things the Children's Advocacy Alliance has done:

RAISED the $1.1M needed to build the Children's Advocacy Center at Child Haven. This facility will provide a one-stop service center for sexually abused children by coordinating the efforts of several agencies in a "child-friendly" environment. The center will serve as headquarters for SAINT (Sexaul Abuse Investigative Team) including law enforcement, Child Protective Services, and medical and mental health personnel. This coordinated effort is designed to minimize trauma for the children, while bringing about more convictions of offenders. The center has been up and running since Spring 2000.

ADVOCATED for the establishment of a Diligent Search Center at Family Court to focus on the location of absent parents/relatives at the very beginning of a case and facilitated the donation of computer equipment for the center, the center itself, and one full time worker and one part-time worker. Many children are now living with relatives because of this center. Note: 25% of relatives do not wish compensation saving the State millions of dollars a year.

ASSEMBLED over 20 national, state and local foster care "key decision makers" and facilitated the Foster Care Millennial Initiative to focus on reforming the bifurcated child welfare system in Nevada and presented written findings to the Legislative Commission's Subcommittee to Study the Integration of State and Local Child Welfare Sysgtems in Nevada; (Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 53; File No. 141, Statutes of Nevada 1999); Update: The 2001 Legislature passed the end of bifurcation in Nevada. Assemblywoman Barbara Buckley spearheaded the charge.

CONTRIBUTED significant financial gifts and volunteer hours to facilitate excursions for children at Child Haven a party for Easter & Christmas as well as Wednesday's Child and unmet needs requests;

Presented the first Report Card on Children to local groups and legislators prior to 2001 session and again prior to the 2003 session and again January 2005.

Represented Nevada at the request of The Child Welfare League of America in March on Capital Hill. Lobbied for "National Children's Memorial Flag Day" last Friday of April. Was successful in urging Congresswoman Shelley Berkley to author legislation. All 50 states flew the CWLA flag April 27th as a result.

Advocated and co-funded with a federal grant the first Nevada sexual predator website, launched May 2004. This website cost Nevada taxpayers nothing. Successfully sponsored legislation for 2005 session co-introduced by Senator Raggio and Senator Titus to strenghten the sex offender website and laws in Nevada SB341.
